As Y’all Like It

The people have asked and we have answered: the Dean’s Men’s doing a lesbian cowboy show. When Rosalind and her loyal cousin Celia flee into the forest to escape the scheming Duke Frederick, they encounter a world where gender, power, and authority are unsteady at best. Meanwhile, Rosalind’s love interest Orlando is being cheated out of her inheritance by her brother Oliver whenever she’s not showing off her poetry and physique to the ladies. When the lovers meet again in the woods, hijinks ensue as women dress as men, shepherds outsmart courtesans, and someone gets in a fight with a lion.

Nov. 13-15, 7:30pm + Nov. 15, 2pm

Our Town

A breakfast before school, first loves, and those quiet ordinary miracles that fill our days. Welcome to Grover’s Corners, NH, in the year 1901. Everyone knows each others’ business, and the milkman still makes house calls. Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” might look like your average slice of small-town life, but the people of Grover’s Corners remind us how life’s biggest moments often hide in the smallest details.

The Tempest

Prospero, a once renowned noble and artist, and his daughter Miranda are stranded on a deserted island, accompanied only by Prospero’s magical powers and magical servants Ariel and Caliban. To enact revenge against his traitorous brother Antonio, Prospero shipwrecks a boat full of nobles onto his island. In the storm the young Prince Ferdinand is separated from the group, in his haze he stumbles upon Miranda, and the two fall in love (much to the chagrin of Prospero). Meanwhile Caliban pressures the nobles’ servants Stephano and Trinculo to kill Prospero and take over the island. As all of this happens Prospero tries in vain to keep control over his domain. Magic abounds, time slips and falls, and ultimately no one is completely sure what is real.

A free preview will take place Thursday, May 15.

May 15-17, 7:30pm + May 17, 2pm

Cactus Flower

An aging nurse. Her playboy boss, who she’s in love with. His uncomfortably-younger girlfriend, who thinks he’s married with kids. And her playwright neighbor, who saved her life.

Dr. Julian Winston has a lot of relationships to juggle: Work wives, fake wives, really-wanna-be wives. And he’s not equipped to handle half of one of those relationships. When his girlfriend, Toni, tries to kill herself because their relationship isn’t going anywhere, he proposes to her. But she thinks he’s married—because that’s what he told her. When he says he’s getting a divorce, she insists on meeting his wife (so she won’t be a ‘home-breaker’), and he must enlist his lovelorn, all-business assistant, Stephanie. But, of course, Toni can tell that Stephanie’s in love. And from here, the lie snowballs…

This screwball comedy, adapted from a French play by Barillet & Grédy, has been described as “funny,” and as having “flower power.” Don’t believe us, or don’t know what that means? Come find out for yourself, either way!

A free preview will take place Thursday, May 8.

May 8-10, 7:30pm + May 10, 2pm

SLIMEGRIMECRIME

By Off-Off Campus

Experience Slimeville, where your typical slimeballs are actually the heroes of this story and squeaky-clean go-getters are as mucky as they come. Crime runs rampant in Slimeville—residents leap at the opportunity to rob their neighbors for all they’ve got, government officials vote to feed the ever-growing rat population, and the FDA is a word whispered amongst bad children who should be punished.

35mm: A Musical Exhibition

What does it mean to “capture life” in a single frame? Are we defined by the moments “in focus” or the ones in between? 35mm: A Musical Exhibition challenges audiences to sink their teeth into a musical that doesn’t offer answers, only moments, stopped in time. In a thrilling collaboration between music, dance, and design, 35mm features an eclectic selection of songs created alongside a series of photographs; exploring themes of life, love, and loss and asking us a deceptively simple question: What is it all for?

A free preview will take place Thursday, Apr. 24.

UT Formal

We are excited to hold a formal again this year!

9th Weekend (Time TBD)
TBD

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

What do rural Illinois, early 2000s “new age” music, and queer culture have in common with a Shakespearean comedy about forbidden love, donkey heads, and fairies? Surprisingly, a lot. In New Athens, IL—a real place, look it up—Hermia and Lysander are in a queer relationship. Egeus, Hermia’s father, does not approve and tries to force Hermia to marry Demetrius. To escape their plight, the two run away together, only telling Hermia’s friend Helena of their plan. Helena, in love with Demetrius, informs him of their plot and all four make their way into the woods, where chaos ensues. Simultaneously, a new age cover band (the Mechanicals) is trying to make a splash at Theseus’ wedding with their debut original work, The Tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe, while a secret queer underground watches from the shadows.

May. 9-11, 7:30pm & May. 11, 2pm

The Play that Goes Wrong

The Play that Goes Wrong is a play-within-a-play comedy about a modern day theater group trying to put on The Murder at Haversham Manor, a fictitious murder mystery set in a 1920s English country manor. While often silly, slapstick, and utterly insane, the theater group characters are ultimately grounded in reality - while what goes wrong is incredible, the characters’ reactions are often not - and we hope that the “goes wrong” elements of this show reflect the experiences and senses of humor shared by our company. A free preview will take place Thursday, May 2.

May. 3-4, 7:30pm & May 4, 2pm

Strings Attached

What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be a puppet? Will you marry me? All of these questions and more are answered by Strings Attached, a new musical that explores two friends’ journeys of self-discovery, commitment, and puppetry. The year is 2012. Jason’s tenth anniversary dating his girlfriend Amy is fast approaching, and it’s becoming clear that this will present an ultimatum for the future of their relationship. Meanwhile, his best friend Walt hopes to rein in Jason’s preposterous proposal plans, but in doing so Walt faces a personal crisis of his own. An encroaching oil baron threatens to ruin everything— and maybe even ruin Christmas. Jason and Walt will consult priests, restaurateurs, and their personal histories in their effort to put together the perfect proposal for Amy. Who’s pulling your strings? A free preview will take place Thursday, April 18.

Off-Off Campus: UTI (University Theater Improv)

Off-Off Campus is the nation’s oldest collegiate improv and sketch comedy group.
Join us for the Winter Quarter Intergenerational Revue! Every Friday from 4th-8th week, Generations 33, 34, and 35 will present a never-before-seen comedy show, never to be seen again… unless you’re in a Groundhog Day situation, in which case, we can’t help you. All love, though!
This season will feature pre-glows from UChicago stand-up comedians, dance crew, and our very own Generation 36.

cmcbonding: games ‘n’ fun

UT’s quarterly Company Meets Company Bash returns again on the UT Discord! After Project Day, come bond with your company beyond being Zoom boxes, and hang out with other UT friends, new and old! We’ll be playing Jackbox and other games, plus some surprise activities along the way… Anyone in a UT production in this winter, who’s been on a past show, or is looking to get involved is welcome!
